The malt market in Armenia saw an overall contraction in volume from 8 767 tons in 2018 to 6 360 tons in 2023. This decline of approximately 27% was not linear, with the market experiencing several sharp downturns and partial recoveries over the six-year period.

A major driver of the market's volatility was the fluctuation in import volumes, which fell dramatically from 4 886 tons in 2018 to 2 547 tons in 2021 before partially rebounding. Domestic production levels also varied, but to a lesser extent, declining from 3 880 tons to 3 746 tons over the same timeframe. The market recorded its first exports in 2023, though the volume remained marginal relative to total market size.

Armenia's malt production saw a two-year increase before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 3 981 tonnes, marking a 2.6% increase from the previous year. However, by 2020, production had fallen to 3 714 tonnes, representing a 6.7% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production declined by 3.6%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 1.2%.

Armenia's malt imports in kind showed significant fluctuations between 2017 and 2020. In 2018, imports peaked at 4 886 tonnes, reflecting a 35.2% increase from the previous year. However, in 2019, imports dropped to their lowest point at 3 532 tonnes, a sharp decline of 27.7%. By 2020, imports rebounded to 3 937 tonnes, marking an 11.5% year-over-year increase. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 9%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Russia was the primary source for Armenia's malt imports in kind, holding a 70.2% share of the total import volume. The remaining imports were distributed among various other countries.

Armenia's malt imports in value terms exhibited notable volatility from 2017 to 2020. In 2019, imports hit their lowest point at 1 775 thousand US dollars, representing a 16.8% decline from the previous year. By 2020, imports surged to 5 607 thousand US dollars, a dramatic increase of 215.9% compared to 2019. Over this period, imports fluctuated significantly, with a 3.2-fold difference between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2019.
