Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, Armenia's cereal germ production saw a significant shift. After a slight dip to 7 820 t in 2019, output jumped by over 50% to 12 092 t in 2020. This surge coincided with the global COVID-19 pandemic, which severely disrupted grain logistics and imports. With Armenia heavily reliant on imported wheat, these supply chain challenges likely spurred increased domestic processing of grain, including cereal germ, to meet local demand.

The market adjusted in the following years. Production eased slightly to 11 730 t in 2021 and then fell more noticeably to 10 677 t in 2022. This decline was driven by the knock-on effects of sanctions and export quotas on Russian wheat—Armenia's primary grain supplier—coupled with rising costs and persistent logistics issues. Despite these headwinds, production recovered to 11 245 t in 2023, even as reports indicated a forthcoming reduction in the domestic wheat harvest.

Throughout the period, the cereal germ market remained tightly linked to Armenia's broader grain sector, characterized by a high dependence on imports, mainly from Russia. International grain price fluctuations and Russian export policy decisions, such as the quotas set for 2024, continued to be key external factors influencing the availability and cost of raw materials for processors.
