Maize bran, sharps and residues market in Austria

Following the update of market regulations in Vienna in October 2018, which revised general business rules, the Austrian maize bran market volume remained stable at around 160-164 thousand tonnes through 2018 and 2019. A sharp expansion then occurred in 2020, with the market growing by 16% to reach 186.4 thousand tonnes, its highest level in the observed period.

After the 2020 peak, the market entered a phase of contraction. Volume eased slightly to 184.3 thousand tonnes in 2021 before falling more noticeably to 166.6 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 160.9 thousand tonnes in 2023, returning to levels similar to those seen before the 2020 surge.

In more recent developments, global corn market dynamics came into play. A record world corn harvest and resumed exports from Ukraine exerted downward pressure on prices, while domestically, Austria experienced a slight reduction in maize cultivation area alongside reports of higher yields in key regions like Lower Austria.

After two years of decline, maize bran, sharps, and residues production in Austria increased. In 2020, Austria produced 175.1 K t of maize bran, sharps, and residues, which is 10.3% higher than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 3.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 158.7 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 5.4%.

Maize bran, sharps, and residues exports from Austria declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 2 393 t, a decrease of 42.2% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 33.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 12.9%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 4 513 t, which also saw the largest increase of 24.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany and Italy were the primary buyers of maize bran, sharps, and residues from Austria, together accounting for 99.6% of total exports in volume terms.

Cross-border shipments of maize bran, sharps, and residues from Austria declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 227.2 K US dollars, a sharp decrease of 43.8% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 23.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 8.4%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 424.7 K US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 43.5%.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Import volumes reached their lowest point in 2019 and peaked in 2020, with a 2.3-fold difference between these years. In 2020, imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues into Austria totaled 13 697 t, an increase of 132.9% compared to 2019. The minimum volume was recorded in 2019 at 5 881 t, which also saw the largest decline of 32.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, France (38.6% of imports in value terms), Germany (29.9% of imports in value terms), and Poland (13.9% of imports in value terms) made the largest contributions to Austria's imports in value terms, jointly accounting for 82.4% of total import flows.
