The ASEAN market for maize bran, sharps and residues grew from 2 356 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 2 537 thousand tonnes in 2019, representing a 7.7% increase. This expansion was followed by a sharp contraction in 2020, when market volume fell to 1 436 thousand tonnes, a decline of 43.4%.

The downturn continued into 2021, with the market dropping to 1 120 thousand tonnes. In 2022, global supply chain disruptions contributed to a further reduction to 1 060 thousand tonnes. A modest recovery began in 2023, as the market volume rose by 4.1% to reach 1 103 thousand tonnes.

ASEAN's production of maize bran, sharps, and residues declined after two years of growth. In 2020, production stood at 1 240 K t, marking a year-on-year decrease of 48.4%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 34.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 13.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 2 402 K t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 13.3%.

Exports maize bran, sharps and residues from ASEAN

Following two years of growth, ASEAN's exports of maize bran, sharps, and residues declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 51.3 K t, down 11.5% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 87.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 23.3%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 58.0 K t, and the largest increase was observed in 2018 at 48.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Japan, South Korea, and Germany were the main destinations for ASEAN's exports of maize bran, sharps, and residues in kind. Japan accounted for 42.7% of exports, South Korea for 1.4%, and Germany for 0.9%, together representing 45.1% of total exports.

Exports in value, K $ US

ASEAN's exports of maize bran, sharps, and residues in value terms increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 14 790 K US dollars, showing a robust rise of 17.1% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 159.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 37.5%.

Over the period 2017–2020, Japan, Germany, and Turkey were the largest buyers of maize bran, sharps, and residues from ASEAN in value terms, though not dominant. Japan accounted for 38.9% of exports, Germany for 3.0%, and Turkey for 1.7%, together making up 43.5% of total exports against a backdrop of numerous smaller partners.

Imports maize bran, sharps and residues to ASEAN

Imports in kind, K t

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. Imports peaked in 2018 and fell to their lowest point in 2017, with a 3.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, ASEAN imported approximately 247.3 K t of maize bran, sharps, and residues, up 28.2% from 2019. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2018 at 258.4 K t. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 25.3%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 205.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Argentina, and Canada were the principal sources for ASEAN's imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues in kind. The United States accounted for 56.2% of imports, Argentina for 10.4%, and Canada for 4.3%, jointly representing 70.9% of total import flows.

The market showed signs of volatility over the observed period. Imports reached their peak in 2020 and their trough in 2017, with a 2.8-fold change between these years. In 2020, ASEAN's imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues totaled 71 597 K US dollars, marking a strong rise of 19.4% from 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 13.1%, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 169.7%.

In the period 2017–2020, the United States, Argentina, and China were the main sources in the geographical breakdown of ASEAN's imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues in value terms. The United States accounted for 54.5% of imports, Argentina for 13.0%, and China for 4.8%, with a combined share of 72.3% of total import flows.
