Earlier Report Observations

The market for maize bran, sharps, and residues in Bolivia expanded in 2019 but contracted significantly in 2020. The initial period was marked by a structural reliance on corn imports, as domestic production met only 27% of national demand, influencing the raw material base for processing.

A sharp turning point occurred in 2021, with production surging by 57% to 88 thousand tons. This growth coincided with research aimed at improving the organization of the maize value chain. Subsequently, the state-owned company Emapa strengthened its role by planning to procure over 100 thousand tons of corn for the livestock sector and investing in processing plants for agricultural by-products. However, by 2023, national corn production had fallen by 21% due to restrictions on biotechnology, climatic variations, and soil quality, creating a raw material shortage even as growing cattle herds bolstered demand for feed.

By 2024, the substantial corn supply deficit continued to impact the availability of maize processing residues, while state-led procurement and processing efforts remained active.
