The Austrian soybean oilcake market volume grew from 425.2 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 491.4 thousand tonnes in 2021, before declining to 428.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. This trajectory was underpinned by a steady expansion of domestic production, which rose from 107.2 thousand tonnes to 153.6 thousand tonnes over the same period, while import and export flows fluctuated.

In 2024, imports of soybean oilcake rose to 372.9 thousand tonnes and exports increased to 78.0 thousand tonnes. Two significant developments shaped the trade environment: the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which from 30 December 2024 imposes strict due diligence on soybean supply chains, and sustained demand from the domestic biofuel sector, which consumes soybean oil and thereby influences the availability and pricing of its co-product, oilcake.

Austria's soybean oilcake production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2019, production stood at 118 000 tonnes, rising to 131 000 tonnes in 2020—a significant increase of 10.8%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production surged by 134.6%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 32.9%.

Austria's soybean oilcake imports have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2019, imports were 400 300 tonnes, rising slightly to 411 500 tonnes in 2020—a gain of 2.8% year-on-year. However, over the 2017–2020 period, imports declined by 6.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.3%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 384 300 tonnes, marking the largest decline of 12.9% that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase of 4.2%.

In 2019, imports totaled 155.9 million US dollars, rising to 165.7 million US dollars in 2020—a modest increase of 6.3% year-on-year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, import value fell by 6.9%, with an annualized rate of -2.4%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 155.9 million US dollars, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 at 8.6%.
