In 2019, tightened regulations on origin and quality reduced import volumes, pulling total market volume down to 120.2 thousand tons despite rising domestic production. Unfavorable weather conditions in 2020 lowered the harvest, but distribution adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthened promotional campaigns for French kiwifruit helped stabilize market volume at 119.5 thousand tons.

Adverse climate in 2021 further decreased production to 46.0 thousand tons, leading to increased imports and a market volume rise to 124.8 thousand tons, while growing consumer demand for organic products began influencing the sector. By 2022, enhanced promotion of French kiwifruit stimulated local consumption, reducing imports and shrinking market volume to 111.6 thousand tons. In 2023, consumer preference for local and organic kiwifruit, coupled with efforts to combat origin fraud, supported domestic output, and market volume stabilized at 109.4 thousand tons.

By 2024, production rebounded from the 2021 low, aided by varietal diversification such as the yellow Zespri kiwifruit, which commands higher prices. Investments in the supply chain grew 31% between 2022 and 2024, improving distribution, while supermarkets expanded dedicated kiwifruit space. The continued popularity of organic kiwifruit and initiatives like the kiwifruit week sustain consumption.
