Earlier Report Observations

The French orange market volume declined from 532 thousand tons in 2018 to 443 thousand tons in 2020. This period was marked by a strong qualitative shift in the juice segment, where French consumers increasingly preferred not-from-concentrate and organic orange juices, supporting demand for processing oranges. Growing health awareness also spurred interest in orange-based healthy beverages, even as total market size contracted.

Market volume continued to decrease, reaching 428 thousand tons in 2021. Industry developments included the launch by major player Citrosuco of a facility to produce natural ingredients from orange waste, reflecting a broader move toward circular economy practices. In 2022, a sharp rise in costs across the supply chain – driven by higher prices for Brazilian oranges, a strong US dollar, and soaring energy, packaging, and transport expenses – pushed up orange and juice prices. Despite these inflationary pressures, the market volume saw a slight rebound to 438 thousand tons, aided by firm demand and tight supply, particularly for Spanish oranges.

The cost pressures intensified into 2023, with retail prices for not-from-concentrate juice rising nearly 9% and from-concentrate juice up 17% year-on-year. This significant price increase contributed to a notable contraction in the orange market, with volume falling to 388 thousand tons. Underlying demand for quality, natural, and organic orange products remained a consistent feature of the market throughout the period.
