Growth continued in 2022, reaching 35 026 tons, as the industry consolidated with the formation of the South African Kiwi Association to promote a unified brand and new varieties spurred farming activity. In 2023, the market volume fell to 22 906 tons amid a sharp increase in exports, which had grown by 1014% since 2014.

Africa's kiwifruit production has grown for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the continent produced 35.5 tonnes of kiwifruit, marking a modest increase of 1.1% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 4.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.4%.

Exports kiwifruit from Africa

The market exhibited significant volatility during this period. Exports peaked in 2017 and reached their lowest point in 2018, with a 7.3-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Africa's kiwifruit exports totaled 654 tonnes, representing a sharp decline of 28.9% compared to the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 490 tonnes. The largest decrease occurred in 2018, with a drop of 86.4%, while the largest increase was seen in 2019, with a rise of 87.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main markets for Africa's kiwifruit exports in volume terms were Belarus, accounting for 55.3% of exports, the Netherlands with 3.0%, and Germany at 1.7%. Together, these three countries represented 60.0% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, Africa's kiwifruit imports declined. In 2020, import volume reached 26 310 tonnes, representing a 12.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 42.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.6%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 30 068 tonnes. The largest increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 29.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the principal suppliers of kiwifruit to Africa in volume terms were Italy, accounting for 43.0% of imports, Greece with 30.3%, and New Zealand at 7.4%. Together, these three countries made up 80.8% of total imports.

Following a two-year increase, Africa's kiwifruit imports in value terms declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 40 023 thousand US dollars, indicating a slight fall of 1.9% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 66.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 18.5%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 40 778 thousand US dollars. The largest increase was seen in 2018, with a rise of 40.2%.
