From 2018 to 2022, French production of currants and gooseberries gradually declined from 10 890 t to 9 960 t, with market volume falling from 11 748 t to 10 623 t. This trend aligned with a longer-term reduction in cultivation area since 2010, as growers managed frequent bioaggressors like powdery mildew and aphids, which required adapted agricultural practices.

In 2023, production rebounded sharply to 12 890 t and market volume reached 12 950 t. That year, the Egalim 3 law was enacted, strengthening commercial relations between suppliers and distributors by regulating promotions in large supermarkets, which likely improved market access and conditions for berry producers.

By 2024, a severe late-June heatwave destroyed half of the national blackcurrant crop, challenging growers and processors. At the same time, exceptional financial support for organic farms and rising demand for blackcurrant in wellness and gemmotherapy products continued to shape the market's evolution.

France's currants and gooseberries production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 9 990 tonnes, marking a 7.0% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 2.5%, which translates to an average annual increase of 0.8%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 10 890 tonnes, with the largest year-over-year rise of 11.7% also occurring that year.

In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 139 tonnes, before surging to 820 tonnes in 2020—a remarkable 492.0% increase from the previous year. The difference between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2019 was 5.9 times. The sharpest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 20.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Austria, and Spain were the primary buyers of French currants and gooseberries, accounting for 43.4%, 30.7%, and 9.1% of export volumes, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 83.2% of France's total exports in this category.
