Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2022, the market volume for homogenised jams, jellies, marmalades, purées and pastes in Australia and New Zealand contracted sharply from 3 319 t to 813 t. This decline was driven by falling domestic production, which dropped from 2 604 t to 2 404 t over the period, and a substantial reduction in imports from 1 245 t to 645 t. Simultaneously, exports surged, particularly in 2021 and 2022, reaching 2 236 t, which further limited product availability on the domestic market.

In 2023, the market volume recovered to 901 t, even as production and imports continued to decrease to 2 059 t and 533 t, respectively. The key driver was a significant drop in exports, which fell to 1 691 t from the previous year's high. A global increase in average import prices for these products by 10.4% likely made exports less attractive in volume terms, redirecting more supply to the domestic market.
