In 2018, favorable weather conditions supported a strong grape harvest in Ukraine, with production reaching 467.6 thousand tons, contributing to a total market volume of 507.2 thousand tons. However, the following year saw a sharp decline to 366.3 thousand tons of production and 424.5 thousand tons of market volume, as yields normalized and imported wines reshaped domestic demand structures.

Market contraction continued through 2020 and 2021, with production falling to 281.0 thousand tons and then 264.1 thousand tons, while market volume decreased to 339.9 thousand tons and 338.1 thousand tons, respectively. Imports of grapes rose significantly in 2021 to 74.1 thousand tons, partly offsetting lower domestic output, as wine consumption remained below European levels, constraining demand for winemaking grapes.

The full-scale war in Ukraine from 2022 severely damaged the sector, with many vineyards in combat or occupied zones, particularly in Odesa region, reducing production to 257.9 thousand tons and market volume to 300.3 thousand tons. Conflict-related logistics disruptions and lower alcohol consumption further pressured the market. In 2023, vineyard area continued to shrink, notably by 2,800 hectares in Odesa, driving production down to 244.9 thousand tons and market volume to 286.3 thousand tons.

Ukraine's grape production volume declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 281.0 thousand tonnes of grapes, representing a 23.3% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 31.4%, with an average annual decline of 11.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 467.6 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 14.2%.

Ukraine's grape production value also declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 350.6 million US dollars, marking a 7.4% drop from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value decreased by 15%, equating to an average annual decline of 5.3%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 415.3 million US dollars, while the largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 8.8%. The highest annual increase was observed in 2018 at 0.7%.

Ukraine's grape exports in volume terms showed positive momentum in 2020, reaching 114 tonnes with a substantial 15.8% year-over-year increase. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 8.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 98 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual decline of 8.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belarus, Moldova, and Romania formed the core of Ukraine's grape export markets in volume terms. Belarus accounted for 50.7% of exports, followed by Moldova at 14.2% and Romania at 13.8%. Together, these three countries represented 78.7% of Ukraine's total grape export flows.

Ukraine's grape exports in value terms increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 142 thousand US dollars, showing a significant 39.8% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 35%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 96 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 8.9%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Moldova, Belarus, and Austria were the principal destinations for Ukraine's grape exports in value terms. Moldova accounted for 37.9% of export value, Belarus for 25.7%, and Austria for 11.6%. Collectively, these three markets represented 75.1% of Ukraine's total grape export value.

Ukraine's grape imports in volume terms increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 59 012 tonnes, marking a modest 1.3% year-over-year uptick. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 25.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 39 646 tonnes, which saw the largest annual decline of 15.7%. The highest annual increase occurred in 2019 at 46.9%.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, Turkey, Iran, and Moldova dominated Ukraine's grape imports in volume terms. These three markets collectively accounted for 82.4% of total import flows.

Ukraine's grape imports in value terms increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 57 733 thousand US dollars, representing a 29.7% increase compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, import value grew by 68.1%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 18.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 30 978 thousand US dollars, which experienced the largest annual decline of 9.8%. The highest annual increase was observed in 2019 at 43.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, Iran, and Uzbekistan played the leading roles in Ukraine's grape imports in value terms. Turkey accounted for 53.4% of import value, Iran for 16.9%, and Uzbekistan for 7.4%. Together, these three countries represented 77.7% of Ukraine's total grape import value.
