Grapes market in Northern Africa

The grape market volume in Northern Africa remained stable at around 2 700 thousand tonnes from 2018 to 2019, despite increased international competition from producers like Peru and Chile and unfavorable weather in key producing countries such as Italy and India. In 2020, the market contracted to 2 240 thousand tonnes, a period marked by global demand stagnation and logistical challenges that affected trade flows.

Recovery began in 2021, with market volume rising to 2 605 thousand tonnes, supported by the start of Morocco's season with early varieties like Early Sweet and expansion into Latin American and African markets. Growth continued in 2022, reaching 2 830 thousand tonnes, driven by the development of seedless grape varieties in Morocco and rising demand in Europe, particularly among young consumers. In 2023, volume slightly declined to 2 755 thousand tonnes due to drought in Morocco affecting production, while the market value surged to 6 772 million US dollars, reflecting higher prices amidst inflation and government subsidies for inputs.

In 2020, Northern Africa produced 2 316 K t of grapes, marking a 16.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 18.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.8%. The smallest decline was observed in 2019, at just 0.1%.

Northern Africa's grape production value declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 4 983 M $ US, representing a 12.3% drop from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 9.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.2%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 6 183 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 12.6%.

Exports grapes from Northern Africa

In 2020, Northern Africa exported 112.5 K t of grapes, showing a modest decline of 5.9% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 13%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 4.5%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 103.2 K t, which experienced the largest decline of 20.2%. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase of 15.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany were the core destinations for grape exports in kind, accounting for 24.1%, 22.4%, and 9.3% of exports, respectively. Together, they made up 55.8% of total export flows.

In 2020, Northern Africa's grape exports in value terms amounted to 242.1 M $ US, down by 0.8% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 2.6%, with an annualized rate of 0.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 229.5 M $ US, which saw the largest decline of 7.7%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, at 6.3%.

During 2017–2020, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany remained the principal buyers of grapes from Northern Africa in value terms, contributing 24.7%, 23.3%, and 9.7% of exports, respectively. Collectively, they accounted for 57.7% of total export value.

Northern Africa's grape import volume increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 35.9 K t, up by 3.4% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 84.2%, with an annualized rate of 22.6%.

Over the period 2017–2020, Iran, South Africa, and Turkey were the largest contributors to grape imports in kind, with shares of 30.2%, 18.5%, and 13.2%, respectively. Together, they represented 61.9% of total import flows.

After two years of growth, foreign grape supplies to Northern Africa declined. In 2020, imports totaled 59.0 M $ US, reflecting a slight fall of 1.1% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 66.9%, with an annualized rate of 18.6%. The peak value was in 2019 at 59.6 M $ US, which also experienced the largest increase of 49.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Iran, South Africa, and Turkey made the biggest contributions to grape imports in value terms, accounting for 29.1%, 24.0%, and 14.4% of imports, respectively. Jointly, they comprised 67.5% of total import flows.
