Ukraine's chestnut production volume declined after a two-year rise. In 2020, the country produced 221.0 tonnes of chestnuts, down 1.4% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 4.7%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.5%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 224.0 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase occurring in 2018 at 4.9%.

Exports chestnuts to Ukraine

In 2019, Ukraine exported 22 000 kg of chestnuts, marking a modest increase of 10.0% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2019, exports grew by 10%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 3.2%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 20 000 kg, which also saw no change from the prior year.

During 2017–2020, Poland and Bulgaria were the key destinations for Ukraine's chestnut exports in volume terms, together accounting for 100.0% of total shipments.

Ukraine's chestnut exports in value terms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports amounted to 6 064 US dollars, showing a sharp drop of 70.9% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2019 period, exports decreased by 71.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -34.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland and Bulgaria remained the dominant markets for Ukraine's chestnut exports in value terms, jointly representing 98.9% of total export flows.

Imports chestnuts in Ukraine

Ukraine's chestnut imports declined after a two-year uptick. In 2020, the country imported 4 612 kg of chestnuts, down 18.3% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 45.6%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 13.3%. The peak import volume was in 2019 at 5 648 kg, with the largest year-on-year increase also occurring in 2019 at 47.2%.

In the 2017–2020 period, China, Poland, and France were the leading sources of Ukraine's chestnut imports in volume terms. China accounted for 53.4% of imports, Poland for 16.2%, and France for 14.4%, together making up 84.0% of total import flows.

The market for chestnut imports in value terms showed an unstable trend over the timeframe. There was a 2.1-fold difference between the peak in 2019 and the low in 2017. In 2020, Ukraine's chestnut imports totaled 13 314 US dollars, reflecting a significant decrease of 10.5% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 14 877 US dollars, with the largest year-on-year increase also in 2019 at 100.6%.
