Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh sour cherries in Ukraine opened the period at 218.7 thousand tonnes in 2018. That year, a key development was the EU granting the right to export Ukrainian cherry planting material under new regulations, creating fresh opportunities for producers who had lost the Russian market and successfully pivoted to new outlets in the EU, Poland, Belarus, and Moldova. After a contraction to 167.4 thousand tonnes in 2019, the market recovered to 174.6 thousand tonnes in 2020 and grew to 193.7 thousand tonnes in 2021. This 2021 increase coincided with rising interest in producing dried fruit and berry products, including sour cherries, which strengthened domestic processing and boosted demand for fresh fruit.

Following the 2021 peak, the market volume fell to 180.2 thousand tonnes in 2022 and declined further to 162.6 thousand tonnes in 2023. The 2024 season began earlier due to favorable weather, yet wholesale prices dropped significantly. The market has also faced persistent logistical challenges, with rising transportation costs complicating shipments from regions affected by the war, impacting the supply chain.
