Earlier Report Observations

The Austrian wine market began the period with a strong volume of 288 thousand tonnes in 2018, supported by a large harvest that year. However, the market contracted to 219 thousand tonnes in 2019 as export shipments grew and production returned to average levels. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 drastically reduced sales to the hospitality sector, but a 17% surge in home consumption and a 16% rise in retail sales kept the overall market volume stable at around 215 thousand tonnes.

Market volume recovered to 217 thousand tonnes in 2021, driven by a high-quality vintage and a 64% expansion in wine delivery services as online sales channels matured. In 2022, volume further increased to 233 thousand tonnes, aided by a new export record and the return of major trade events like VieVinum, which boosted international demand for Austrian wines.

In 2023, the market volume fell sharply to 173 thousand tonnes, while the value declined to 720 million USD.
