The market volume for mineral and aerated waters in Austria contracted from 835.3 million litres in 2018 to 709.5 million litres in 2022, with a particularly sharp decline of 9.5% recorded in 2020. This period coincided with a highly concentrated market structure, where leader Vöslauer held a 40% share in 2018. After a further modest decrease in 2021, the market stabilized in 2022 with a volume of 709.5 million litres, a drop of just 1.1% from the previous year.

Consumer preferences began shifting during this period, with a notable trend towards mildly sparkling and still water varieties gaining momentum from 2022 onwards. By 2024, the share of still water had increased to 28%, marking a 10% rise, reflecting changing tastes. Buyers also placed greater emphasis on quality, purity, regional origin, and environmentally friendly packaging, with growing demand for bio-mineral water produced without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Market activity showed signs of recovery in the following years. Austrian mineral water exports grew by more than 12% in 2023, providing support to production. In 2024, domestic sales increased by 3% to nearly 700 million litres, indicating a rebound in consumption. This was accompanied by a rise in the share of returnable packaging to 20.5% of filling volume, underscoring the industry's adaptation to sustainability trends.
