Earlier Report Observations

Grape wine production in Latin America and the Caribbean declined from 3 350 million liters in 2018 to 2 448 million liters in 2023, with market volume falling from 2 596 million liters to 2 072 million liters. The early period saw growth in independent vineyards and enhanced global competitiveness of key producers like Chile and Argentina, though overall output began to taper. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 severely disrupted export channels due to border closures, causing a sharp contraction in production and market size, even as some domestic markets experienced a temporary boost from renewed interest in local wines.

After a partial rebound in 2021, production resumed its downward trend. In Argentina, export-support policies such as the removal of export duties and 7% rebates were implemented to bolster international competitiveness. However, regional exports still declined, partly driven by stricter regulatory requirements in important markets like the European Union and a shift in consumer preferences toward premium wines and low-alcohol beverages, which spurred launches of non‑alcoholic products.

By 2023, the market continued evolving toward higher‑quality segments, supported by expanding grape cultivation in Mexico and a growing presence of Argentine wineries in the region. Market volume settled at 2 072 million liters, reflecting the industry’s structural adaptation to post‑pandemic conditions and changing demand patterns.
