Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the market for fresh, chilled, or frozen goose meat and edible offal in SADC remained stable, with volumes fluctuating between 13 300 t and 13 500 t. Domestic production held steady at around 13 280 t per year, while imports and exports were minimal.

In 2022, market volume surged by nearly 50% to 19 713 t, driven entirely by a spike in imports to 6 452 t. By 2023, the market returned to its previous scale at 13 365 t as imports fell back to 81 t.

During 2023, the South African government considered a temporary rebate on import duties for chicken meat due to highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks that had caused the loss of approximately 1.4 million chickens. This policy measure aimed at addressing poultry availability and food security could have indirectly influenced the goose meat market in the SADC region by altering import conditions and competition within the poultry sector.
