Algeria's garlic market volume grew to 223 thousand tonnes in 2019, aided by higher domestic production even as local exporters faced sharply reduced opportunities abroad. A supply crunch the following year pushed export prices to 2.00 USD/kg and contributed to a market contraction to 171 thousand tonnes in 2020.

The market recovered from 2021, reaching 218 thousand tonnes by 2023. This rebound followed the stabilization of garlic prices and was supported by government programs to modernize wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, improving distribution. Growing consumer demand for healthier frozen and processed vegetable products also provided a lift to the market.

After two consecutive years of growth, garlic production in Algeria experienced a decline. In 2020, the country produced 170.9 thousand tonnes of garlic, representing a 23.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 38.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 11.4%. The peak production was recorded in 2019 at 223.3 thousand tonnes, while the most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 63.8%.
