Not further prepared dried vegetables market in Belarus

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for not further prepared dried vegetables in Belarus grew steadily, rising from 1 548 t to 2 441 t. This expansion was driven by increased imports, which peaked at 1 430 t in 2020, while domestic production also rose from 1 096 t to 1 304 t over the same period.

After peaking in 2020, the market contracted to 2 382 t in 2021 and further to 2 045 t in 2022, before recovering to 2 156 t in 2023. Production fell to 1 116 t in 2022 despite a reported increase in overall vegetable output that expanded the raw material base for drying. Exports declined sharply from 501 t in 2018 to 89 t by 2022, reducing the share of domestically produced dried vegetables sold abroad.

In 2024, key developments include the launch of dried vegetable production by Vitbiokor, a major domestic processor, and new labeling requirements for exports to Russia effective from October 2024, which introduce administrative changes for Belarusian exporters.

Belarus's production of not further prepared dried vegetables increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 304 tonnes, marking a moderate 5.8% rise compared to 2019. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually declined by 20.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of -7.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 096 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 33.4%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant increase of 12.4%.

Belarus's exports of not further prepared dried vegetables declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 294 tonnes, representing a 9.7% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell sharply by 73%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 35.4%.

In 2020, exports reached 397 thousand US dollars, reflecting a sharp 28.4% drop compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 63.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -28.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia was the key buyer of not further prepared dried vegetables from Belarus in value terms, accounting for 85.0% of total exports. The remaining 15.0% was distributed among a diversified group of other countries.

Belarus's imports of not further prepared dried vegetables increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 1 430 tonnes, up by 14.6% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 5.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.7%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 952 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 29.9%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant increase of 31.1%.

In 2020, the country imported 3 407 thousand US dollars' worth, which is 16.5% higher than in 2019. However, over the broader 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 13.6%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 4.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2 562 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 35.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Russia, and Poland led the import structure in value terms for not further prepared dried vegetables to Belarus. China accounted for 40.5% of imports, Russia for 32.4%, and Poland for 10.5%. Together, these three countries represented 83.4% of total import flows.
