Fresh grapes market in Morocco

From 2018 to 2019, Morocco's fresh grape production increased from 451 000 tonnes to 460 000 tonnes, with market volume rising from 444 500 tonnes to 453 600 tonnes. This growth was supported by public investment under the Plan Maroc Vert, which funded a new processing unit in the Casablanca-Settat region, enhancing local capacity. Additionally, the conversion of 500 hectares of cereal land to vineyards in Benslimane in 2019 contributed to an increase in national supply.

In 2020, production fell to 397 000 tonnes and market volume dropped to 390 000 tonnes, likely influenced by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the decline, the sector introduced new seedless white grape varieties to the European market and launched the Albafruit campaign with Early Sweet, Arra 30, and Timpson varieties, diversifying the export portfolio. The following year saw a recovery to 420 000 tonnes of production and 411 000 tonnes of market volume, as heat and rain damage to Italy's grape harvest created export opportunities for Moroccan producers. The establishment of a local agency, Grapa Varieties, to support growers of Arra and Early Sweet varieties further strengthened the sector's export capabilities.

Production fell sharply again to 320 000 tonnes in 2022, with market volume at 312 000 tonnes, then stabilized at 310 000 tonnes of production and 303 000 tonnes of market volume in 2023. During this period, Moroccan exporters faced cost pressure and inflation in European markets, which encouraged them to consolidate their market share. Marketing efforts emphasizing the freshness advantage of Moroccan grapes and improved logistics with short transit times to Europe helped maintain export competitiveness.

Following two years of growth, Morocco's fresh grape production volume declined. In 2020, production reached 396.9 K t, marking a 13.6% decrease from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, overall production increased by 5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.6%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 459.5 K t, with the largest annual increase occurring in 2018 at 19.3%.

After two years of increase, fresh grape production in Morocco declined in value terms. In 2020, the output was valued at 406.8 M $ US, down 21.0% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 12.9%, equating to an annualized decline of 4.5%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 515.3 M $ US, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 7.9%.

Following a two-year decrease, Morocco's fresh grape exports increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 6 982 t, representing an 11.1% rise compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, overall exports decreased by 4.5%, which corresponds to an annualized decline of 1.5%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 283 t, with the largest annual drop also occurring that year at 10.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom were the primary markets for Morocco's fresh grape exports in volume terms. France accounted for 37.2% of exports, Italy for 24.0%, and the United Kingdom for 8.1%. Together, these three countries represented 69.3% of total export flows.

After two years of decline, Morocco's fresh grape exports increased in value. In 2020, exports totaled 7 157 K $ US, up 1.6% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value decreased by 20.8%, equating to an annualized decline of 7.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 7 045 K $ US, with the largest annual decrease occurring in 2018 at 13.3%.
