After a slight dip to 51 411 t in 2019, Morocco's shelled almond market surged to 77 385 t in 2020. The initial decline reflected stagnant almond yields that had hampered domestic competitiveness for two decades, while imports began to rise with Portugal joining traditional suppliers like the United States and Spain. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further disrupted supply chains and boosted import volumes, contributing to the market's rapid expansion.

The market continued growing to a peak of 104 409 t in 2021, as imported almonds captured about 85% of total consumption. A strong recovery in domestic production to 80 463 t in 2022, alongside a roughly 20% drop in shelled almond imports, led to a slight market contraction. That year also saw Argentina enter as a new supplier. By 2023, competitive pricing and residual stocks from previous seasons pushed imports higher again, but overall market volume eased to 97 084 t as local output fell.

In 2020, Morocco produced 61 536 tonnes of shelled almonds, representing a significant 31.6% increase compared to 2019. Production reached its lowest point in 2019 at 46 768 tonnes, with the largest decline that year of 12.9%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 15%, averaging an annualized growth rate of 4.8%.

In 2020, the value of shelled almond production in Morocco was $376.5 million US, up 36.2% from 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at $276.4 million US, which saw the largest decline of 17.9%. Exports shelled almonds from Morocco

Morocco's exports of shelled almonds increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 498 tonnes, an 11.3% rise compared to the previous year. Exports hit their lowest level in 2018 at 358 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 39.6%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 24.9%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 16%, with an average annual decline of 5.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark were the primary buyers of shelled almonds from Morocco, accounting for 86.1% of total exports in volume. Germany led with 48.4%, followed by the Netherlands at 22.0%, and Denmark at 15.8%.

Morocco's export value of shelled almonds rose for the second year in a row in 2020, reaching $3 044 thousand US, a strong 15.2% increase from the previous year. The lowest value was in 2018 at $2 242 thousand US, which saw the largest decline of 38.5%. The largest increase was in 2019 at 17.8%. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value fell by 16.5%, with an average annual decrease of 5.8%.

Morocco's imports of shelled almonds grew for the third consecutive year in 2020, totaling 16 347 tonnes, a substantial 221.2% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports surged by 1 662.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 160.2%.
