Earlier Report Observations

The fibreboard market in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 1,360.8 thousand cubic meters in 2018, market volume dropped to 1,176.5 thousand cubic meters the following year. This decline was followed by a period of relative stability in 2020 and 2021, with volumes hovering around 1,180–1,190 thousand cubic meters.

A sharp turnaround occurred in 2022, when the market expanded to 1,360.6 thousand cubic meters, nearly matching the 2018 level. Growth continued into 2023, reaching 1,396.6 thousand cubic meters – the highest point in the observed period. This recovery coincided with a substantial increase in domestic production, which rose from 486.6 thousand cubic meters in 2020 to 811.2 thousand cubic meters in 2022, before moderating in 2023.

Imports, which had been declining steadily from 969.8 thousand cubic meters in 2018 to 653.3 thousand cubic meters in 2021, partially rebounded in 2023. The net effect of these movements was a market that ended the period larger than it began, despite the intermediate downturn.
