Non-coniferous roundwood production in Sub-Saharan Africa began its upward trajectory in 2018, reaching 706 million m³. This growth was supported by a 25% increase in wood-related manufacturing output in South Africa, particularly in paper and paper products, which heightened industrial demand for roundwood. Government initiatives to establish a Furniture Manufacturing Hub also signaled future market expansion. By 2019, production rose to 711 million m³ as supply constraints for sawlogs became apparent, with annual supply capability lagging behind demand by over 1 million m³, incentivizing increased harvest volumes.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused a temporary cooling of wood prices, but global sawlog prices rose by 8% in late 2020 due to robust demand from North America, Europe, and Asia, benefiting export-oriented South African producers. Production continued to climb, reaching 719 million m³ in 2021 and 728 million m³ in 2022. During this period, timber prices surged further because of global supply chain disruptions, rising fuel costs, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Concurrently, increased construction demand and a shift toward wood-based building materials sustained consumption growth.

In 2023, non-coniferous roundwood production advanced to 734 million m³, extending the steady expansion observed throughout the period.

Sub-Saharan Africa's production of non-coniferous roundwood has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 711.1 million cubic meters of non-coniferous roundwood, marking a 0.7% increase from 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 2.9%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.9%.
