Production of coniferous wood fuel in Sub-Saharan Africa increased steadily from 10.7 million m³ in 2018 to 11.7 million m³ in 2023. This growth was anchored in the region's enduring reliance on wood fuel for household cooking, which accounts for over 60% of domestic energy use. The launch of the Multifunctional Landscape Governance (GML) project in 2018 aimed to strengthen knowledge, techniques, and policies within the wood fuel value chain, providing a foundation for more organized production and supporting initial output gains.

Continued expansion was facilitated by efforts to enhance production efficiency, including the promotion of improved carbonization techniques and kilns adapted to local contexts from 2019 onward. Simultaneously, regional initiatives focused on making the sector more sustainable and better regulated, which helped accommodate the persistent demand pressure from a growing population. These combined drivers supported consistent annual production increases throughout the period.

By 2023, output reached 11.7 million m³, reflecting the sector's vital role in the regional energy mix and the incremental impact of programs aimed at improving governance and technical practices within the wood fuel value chain.

Sub-Saharan Africa has seen its coniferous wood fuel production grow for the third year in a row. In 2019, the region produced 10,970 thousand cubic meters, and by 2020, this figure had risen by 1.9% to reach 10,970 thousand cubic meters. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 3.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.2%.
