Earlier Report Observations

Wood pellet production in Sub-Saharan Africa held constant at 34 000 t annually from 2018 through 2023. The market was underpinned by strong household reliance on wood energy for cooking and heating, with over 60% of homes using this source, sustaining local demand. However, the absence of recycling for wood industry waste in several countries limited the supply of raw materials for pellet manufacturing, preventing output growth.

Growing demand for sustainable and renewable fuel boosted interest in wood pellets, valued for their high energy density and low moisture content as an alternative to fossil fuels. Energy policies promoting renewables and CO2 emission reductions further encouraged consumption. By 2024, gradual development of production units with increasing capacities was noted, though raw material availability from sawdust and wood chips remained a critical constraint, alongside cost pressures from energy and transport prices.
