Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas in Cyprus experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2021. Market volume grew from 5 540 metric tons in 2018 to a peak of 6 149 metric tons in 2021, supported by a rise in domestic production to 5 470 metric tons that year. Imports consistently increased throughout this period, reaching 679 metric tons in 2021, indicating a growing supplementary source of supply alongside local output.

A reversal occurred from 2022, with market volume declining to 5 590 metric tons and further to 5 371 metric tons in 2023. Domestic production fell to 4 840 metric tons and then 4 610 metric tons over these two years. During this period of contraction, the Cypriot authorities began implementing the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027. This plan, which opened for grant applications in late 2023, regulates agricultural production and provides financial support for existing and new enterprises, setting a framework that could influence future production levels.

In 2024, a significant development was the surge in imports, which jumped to 1 059 metric tons. Concurrently, public consultations were launched on the Cyprus Food Safety Authority Establishment Law, a legislative initiative aimed at consolidating fragmented food safety controls under a single authority. This proposed change is expected to impact the regulatory environment for fresh produce, including brassicas.
