It expanded from 7 930 tons in 2018 to a peak of 9 072 tons in 2019, then contracted sharply to 7 752 tons in 2020. A recovery followed in 2021, lifting the volume to 8 619 tons, before a renewed downturn brought it to 8 472 tons in 2022 and 7 830 tons in 2023.

The market's decline to 7 830 tons in 2023, a drop of 7.6%, occurred alongside a significant surge in food prices across Cyprus. This inflationary pressure, marked by sharp increases for essential grocery items, dampened consumer purchasing power and reduced demand for fresh vegetables, including onions and shallots.
