The market for fresh lettuce and chicory in Cyprus showed volatility between 2018 and 2020. Consumption fell to 3 645 t in 2019 before a strong rebound to 4 165 t in 2020.

In 2021, the new Consumer Protection Law came into effect, updating market rules. The COVID-19 pandemic continued to influence household demand for fresh produce. The market volume, however, decreased to 3 859 t that year. For 2022, the government introduced a zero VAT rate on fresh vegetables starting December 1, improving product accessibility. Amid broader inflation and energy shocks impacting food retail, the market stabilized at 3 845 t.

The maintained zero VAT policy during 2023, together with a clear consumer trend toward healthier eating, supported market growth. These elements helped drive consumption upward, with the market volume reaching 4 014 t for the year.

Following two years of decline, lettuce and chicory production in Cyprus rebounded. In 2020, output reached 3 290 tonnes, marking a significant 23.2% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 5.9%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 2 670 tonnes, when output fell by 11.6%.

After two years of growth, lettuce and chicory imports into Cyprus decreased. In 2020, imports amounted to 874.8 tonnes, down 10.3% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 5.8%, averaging 1.9% growth per year. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 975.5 tonnes, when imports rose by 9.2%.

During 2017-2020, the Netherlands and Spain were the primary sources of lettuce and chicory imports into Cyprus by volume, together making up 89.7% of total imports, while other countries accounted for the remainder.

Lettuce and chicory imports into Cyprus declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the import value stood at 1 013 000 US dollars, a 13.8% drop from the prior year. From 2017 to 2020, import value increased by 9%, equivalent to an average annual rate of 2.9%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 1 250 000 US dollars, when imports surged by 34.5%.
