The ASEAN dried shelled peas market volume fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 139.3 thousand tons in 2018. It dipped to 134.4 thousand tons in 2019 before rising to a peak of 147.5 thousand tons in 2020. A sharp decline followed in 2021 to 112.5 thousand tons, but the market rebounded to 139.1 thousand tons in 2022. Volume then eased to 129.8 thousand tons in 2023.

By 2024, import volumes reached 114.3 thousand tons, up significantly from 93.9 thousand tons in 2023, while exports fell to 0.7 thousand tons. This increase was driven by rising consumer demand for plant-based proteins, which boosted the use of dried peas in various food applications. The expansion of distribution channels, particularly e-commerce, also made these products more accessible to consumers across the region.

ASEAN's production of dried shelled peas has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 36,344 tonnes, marking a 10.3% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 14%, with an average annual decline of 4.9%.

The market exhibited significant volatility during these years. Exports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a 13.7-fold difference between these two years. In 2020, ASEAN exported 8,700 tonnes of dried shelled peas, representing a sharp drop of 39.4% from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 15,000 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 1,273.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, China, and South Korea were the key destinations for exports in volume terms. India accounted for 62.5% of exports, China for 14.3%, and South Korea for 5.9%. Together, these three countries made up 82.6% of total export flows.

The market showed signs of volatility over the observed period. Export values hit their low in 2017 and reached a high in 2019, with a 22-fold variation between these years. In 2020, ASEAN's foreign supplies of dried shelled peas amounted to 7,784 thousand US dollars, down by 55.4% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 17,444 thousand US dollars, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 984.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, India consistently dominated exports in value terms, accounting for 71.5% of the total. This indicates a high concentration on the Indian market, with the remaining share distributed among other countries.

After two years of decline, ASEAN's import volume of dried shelled peas increased. In 2020, imports totaled 119,900 tonnes, showing a strong year-over-year growth of 10.8%. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 46.6%, with an average annual decline of 18.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 108,100 tonnes, and the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 49.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Canada, Ukraine, and the United States were the leading sources for imports in volume terms. Canada contributed 41.9% of imports, Ukraine 22.7%, and the United States 15.1%. Collectively, these three countries represented 79.7% of total import flows.

ASEAN's imports of dried shelled peas increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region imported 59,030 thousand US dollars worth of dried shelled peas, which is 13.9% higher than in 2019. Despite this recent growth, imports decreased by 40.2% between 2017 and 2020, equating to an average annual decline of 15.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 47,951 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 51.4%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Canada, Ukraine, and the United States formed the core group of markets for imports in value terms. Canada accounted for 41.4% of imports, Ukraine for 19.0%, and the United States for 16.4%. Together, these three countries made up 76.8% of total import flows.
