Between 2018 and 2020, the dried shelled peas market in Ethiopia expanded from 433 thousand tons to 513 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by a sharp increase in imports, which more than doubled to 100 thousand tons in 2020, while domestic production saw a steady rise.

Following the peak in 2020, the market stabilized around 500 thousand tons, declining slightly to 482 thousand tons by 2023. Import volumes remained elevated but began to taper, while exports—previously negligible—grew noticeably to 15 thousand tons in 2023. Domestic production continued its upward trend, reaching 411 thousand tons in the same year.

Over the full period from 2018 to 2023, the total market volume increased by 11%, reflecting consistent demand supported by both local output and international trade.
