In value terms, the market exhibited a different trajectory, falling from 19 782 million US dollars in 2018 to 16 359 million in 2019 despite higher volume, indicating a period of lower prices. Value then rose consistently to 19 495 million in 2020, 23 834 million in 2021, and 27 217 million in 2022, before a slight decrease to 26 577 million in 2023.

ASEAN produced 75 504 thousand metric tons of cassava in 2020, representing a 1.7% year-over-year contraction. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 4.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 74 518 thousand metric tons. That same year saw the largest decline of 5.9%, while 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 3.1%.

In 2020, ASEAN's cassava output was valued at 21 002 million US dollars, marking a 27.2% increase compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value grew by 16.3%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 5.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 16 510 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 19.1%.

Exports cassava from ASEAN

Exports in kind, K t

Following two consecutive years of decline, ASEAN's cassava exports rebounded in 2020. The region exported 3 962 thousand metric tons of cassava that year, representing a 39.8% improvement over 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 57.7%, equating to an annualized decline of 24.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 833 thousand metric tons, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 55.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, China overwhelmingly dominated as the primary destination for ASEAN's cassava exports in volume terms, accounting for 97.0% of total shipments.

The data reveals irregular fluctuations, indicating a volatile market environment. Exports peaked in 2017 and reached their lowest point in 2019, with a 2.4-fold difference between these years. In 2020, ASEAN's cassava exports amounted to 1 047 million US dollars, showing a sharp 71.9% increase over the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 609 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 46.5%.

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout the period. Import volumes varied significantly, with a 7.1-fold difference between the low in 2017 and the high in 2019. In 2020, ASEAN's cassava imports were recorded at 584 thousand metric tons, showing an abrupt 72.5% reduction year-over-year. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 124 thousand metric tons, which also saw the largest increase of 214.1%.

After two consecutive years of decline, ASEAN's cassava imports increased in 2020. Imports amounted to 588 million US dollars that year, representing a 28.3% increase compared to the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 16.5%, equating to an annualized decline of 5.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 458 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 27.6%.
