The market for dried shelled pigeon peas in ASEAN remained relatively stable initially, with domestic consumption hovering near 344 thousand tons in 2019 after a slight increase from 336.5 thousand tons in 2018. A gradual decline then followed, with the market volume easing to 322.4 thousand tons in 2020 and 305 thousand tons in 2021.

A dramatic shift occurred from 2022, as the market volume collapsed to 113.7 thousand tons and further to 54.8 thousand tons in 2023. This severe contraction was driven by an unprecedented rise in exports, which surged from 19.8 thousand tons in 2021 to 198.4 thousand tons in 2022 and 245.8 thousand tons in 2023, redirecting a large share of regional production overseas.

More recently, evolving consumer preferences in ASEAN, including a growing focus on health and plant-based proteins, are supporting demand for nutritious foods like pigeon peas. Simultaneously, global factors such as supply chain disruptions and climate-related production challenges in key supplier countries continue to affect market conditions.

In 2020, the region exported 0.6 thousand tons, which represents a sharp decline of 89.8% compared to the previous year.
