The Armenian dried shelled legumes market experienced considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Market volume expanded from 11 886 metric tons in 2018 to a peak of 15 377 metric tons in 2020, before contracting to 12 546 metric tons in 2021.

A recovery to 13 938 metric tons in 2022 coincided with Armenia's robust economic growth, which bolstered demand for agricultural products including dried legumes.

Domestic production trended downward after 2021, falling to 5 522 metric tons in 2023, while import volumes fluctuated significantly to meet consumption needs.

Armenia's production of dried shelled legumes has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 8,451 tons, marking a significant 12.4% rise compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 4.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 6,626 tons, with the largest drop of 25.4% occurring that same year. Conversely, the biggest increase was seen in 2019, when production grew by 13.5%.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a 50-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Armenia exported 49 tons of dried shelled legumes, representing a 114.1% increase from 2019. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 145 tons. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 84.2%, while the most significant increase was in 2018, surging by 4,877.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy and the United States were the leading destinations for Armenia's exports in kind, together accounting for 81.9% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among other countries.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. The lowest export value was in 2017, while the highest was reached in 2018, with a peak-to-trough ratio of 23 times. In 2020, Armenia's exports of dried shelled legumes amounted to 91,000 US dollars, indicating a steep 43.9% year-over-year advance. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 145,000 US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 56.6%, whereas the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 2,213.3%.

Armenia's imports of dried shelled legumes have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 6,975 tons, which is 17.6% more than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 54.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia played a leading role in Armenia's imports of dried shelled legumes in kind, holding an 80.5% share of total flows. The remainder was distributed across other trading partners.

After a two-year decrease, Armenia's imports of dried shelled legumes have rebounded. In 2020, Armenia imported 3,377,000 US dollars worth of dried shelled legumes, representing an intense 40.8% year-over-year rise. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 22.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 7.1%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 2,398,000 US dollars, with the largest decline of 7.7% occurring that same year.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, Russia, Uzbekistan, and India accounted for the largest share of Armenia's imports in value terms. Russia held 64.2%, Uzbekistan 8.1%, and India 6.1%, together comprising 78.4% of total flows.
