The market volume for fresh onions and shallots in Armenia exhibited considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. After a peak of over 46 000 t in 2020, the market contracted sharply by more than a quarter in 2021, falling to 34 000 t.

A strong recovery followed in 2022, with market volume expanding by 24% to 42 000 t. This rebound coincided with supply chain disruptions in the region caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which affected trade flows and pricing. Simultaneously, growing consumer preference for healthy and natural foods supported demand for fresh produce.

By 2023, the market stabilized at approximately 43 000 t, marking a modest 2.6% increase and suggesting a return to more consistent levels after the earlier fluctuations.

Armenia's onion and shallot production rebounded in 2020 after a two-year decline. The country produced 43,758 tonnes that year, marking an 18.2% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 10.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -3.6%. The lowest output was recorded in 2019 at 37,008 tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 19.7% decrease.

Armenia imported 2,640 tonnes of onions and shallots in 2020, a 51.7% decrease year-on-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports declined by 46.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -18.8%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 5,468 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 24.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Armenia's onion and shallot imports in volume were heavily concentrated, with Russia and Iran together accounting for 80.4% of total flows, while other partners made up the remainder.

The import market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Imports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 724 thousand US dollars, then surged to a peak in 2019 at 1,442 thousand US dollars—a two-fold difference. In 2020, Armenia's onion and shallot import value stood at 1,304 thousand US dollars, down 9.6% from 2019. The sharpest decline occurred in 2018 with a 37.3% drop, while the largest increase was in 2019 at 99.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Iran, Russia, and Turkey were the primary sources for Armenia's onion and shallot imports in value terms, representing 37.3%, 29.2%, and 28.4% respectively. Together, these three countries accounted for 95.0% of total import flows.
