The Armenian dried shelled beans market volume grew from 3 046 t in 2018 to 3 282 t in 2020. This expansion was driven by shifts in consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, which increased demand for beans as an ingredient due to the rise of meal delivery services.

After a slight contraction to 3 175 t in 2021, the market dropped sharply to 2 589 t in 2022. The decline coincided with the introduction of the new Customs Code in October 2022, which altered import and export procedures. The market recovered to 2 917 t in 2023. Production throughout the period relied on small-scale farmers, particularly in the Syunik region, and featured traditional varieties like the Armenian red climbing bean.

Armenia's dried shelled bean production increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 2,818 tonnes, marking a 3.2% rise from the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually declined by 23.3%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 8.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2,531 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 31.1%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant increase at 7.9%.

The market exhibited considerable volatility during these years. Exports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a staggering 91-fold difference between these two years. In 2020, Armenia's cross-border shipments of dried shelled beans totaled 27.3 tonnes, representing a 39.7% increase compared to 2019. The maximum export volume was recorded in 2018 at 143.1 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 86.3%, while the most substantial increase was in 2018, soaring by 8,955.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy and the United States were the primary destinations for Armenia's dried shelled bean exports in volume terms, together accounting for 93.9% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among other markets.

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. The lowest export value was recorded in 2017, while the highest occurred in 2018, with a peak-to-trough ratio of 37 times. In 2020, dried shelled bean deliveries from Armenia amounted to 78.8 thousand US dollars, reflecting a sharp increase of 35.2% compared to 2019. The maximum value was reached in 2018 at 142.6 thousand US dollars. The largest decline took place in 2019, falling by 59.1%, whereas the most significant increase was in 2018, jumping by 3,633.6%.

During the 2017–2020 period, the United States and Italy played leading roles in Armenia's dried shelled bean exports in value terms, jointly holding a 93.7% share of total flows. The remainder was spread across other countries.

In 2020, Armenia's dried shelled bean import volume stood at 491.8 tonnes, showing a strong uptick of 13.2% from 2019. Over the broader span from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 16.2%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 5.7%. The minimum import volume was recorded in 2019 at 434.4 tonnes, while the maximum was in 2018 at 658.0 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 34.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Argentina were the top suppliers of dried shelled beans to Armenia in volume terms, with shares of 39.7%, 26.1%, and 12.0% of total imports, respectively. Together, they accounted for 77.8% of all imports in kind.

Armenia imported 510.7 thousand US dollars worth of dried shelled beans in 2020, representing a robust rise of 16.3% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 9%, which equates to an average annual rate of 3.1%. The minimum import value was recorded in 2019 at 439.0 thousand US dollars, while the maximum was in 2018 at 621.6 thousand US dollars. The largest decline took place in 2019, falling by 29.4%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China formed the key group of partners for Armenia's dried shelled bean imports in value terms, with shares of 33.8%, 26.1%, and 13.2% of total imports, respectively. Collectively, they represented 73.1% of total flows.
