The ASEAN dried shelled chickpeas market volume increased from 400.2 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 473.2 thousand tons in 2020, marking a growth of over 18% across the two-year period.

After 2020, the market entered a phase of consistent decline, falling to 405.7 thousand tons by 2023. This contraction represented a reduction of approximately 14% from the peak, with annual decreases averaging around 5%.

ASEAN's production of dried shelled chickpeas has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 482.0 K t, marking a 3.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 8.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 2.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 534.6 K t. That year also saw the largest increase of 1.5%, while the most significant drop occurred in 2019 with a 6.6% decrease.

Exports dried shelled chickpeas from ASEAN

The export market for dried shelled chickpeas from ASEAN showed considerable volatility during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 at 21.4 K t, which represented a sharp decline of 63.2% from 2019. In contrast, the peak was in 2018 with 146.3 K t, resulting in a 6.8-fold difference between the highest and lowest years. That peak year also saw the largest increase of 274.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, China, and Pakistan were the dominant destinations for ASEAN's dried shelled chickpea exports in volume terms. India accounted for 35.9% of exports, China for 26.4%, and Pakistan for 15.9%. Together, these three countries represented 78.2% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

The value of ASEAN's dried shelled chickpea exports experienced irregular and volatile changes. In 2020, exports amounted to 14.2 M $ US, showing a sudden decrease of 52.7% compared to 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 109.3 M $ US, creating a peak-to-trough amplitude of 7.7 times from 2018 to 2020. That peak year also saw the largest increase of 222.5%, while the most significant decline occurred in 2019 with a 72.6% drop.

During the 2017–2020 period, China, India, and Pakistan remained the key markets for ASEAN's dried shelled chickpea exports in value terms. Together, these three countries accounted for 82.1% of total export flows.

Imports dried shelled chickpeas to ASEAN

ASEAN's imports of dried shelled chickpeas in volume terms showed an upward trend. In 2020, imports reached 12.6 K t, reflecting a substantial increase of 38.3% from the previous year. Over the full period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 2.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 9.1 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 23.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Australia, and the United States were the primary sources for ASEAN's dried shelled chickpea imports in volume terms. India led with 43.8% of imports, followed by Australia at 14.2% and the United States at 7.8%. Collectively, these three countries made up 65.8% of total import flows.

ASEAN's imports of dried shelled chickpeas in value terms rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2020, imports amounted to approximately 11.4 M $ US, indicating a significant rise of 19.8% compared to 2019. However, over the entire 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 29%, with a compound annual growth rate of -10.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 9.5 M $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 24.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, India, Australia, and the United States were the largest suppliers of dried shelled chickpeas to ASEAN in value terms. India accounted for 46.0% of imports, Australia for 11.5%, and the United States for 8.3%. Together, these three countries represented 65.9% of total import value.
