The market volume followed a different path, rising from 400.2 thousand tons to a high of 473.2 thousand tons in 2020, then falling back to 405.7 thousand tons by 2023.

By 2024, several factors were shaping the market. Growing health and environmental consciousness boosted demand for plant-based proteins like chickpeas, with agencies such as the Singapore Food Agency actively promoting alternative proteins. In the Philippines, research institutions like Benguet State University worked to introduce chickpea cultivation, potentially supporting local supply. Additionally, the expansion of e-commerce in the region improved distribution channels for chickpea products.

Dried shelled chickpeas production in South-eastern Asia has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 482.0 thousand tonnes, marking a moderate 3.5% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 8.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 2.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 534.6 thousand tonnes, with a slight increase of 1.5% that year. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, when production decreased by 6.6%.

The market showed considerable volatility during this period. Exports reached their peak in 2018 at 146.3 thousand tonnes and hit their lowest point in 2020 at 21.4 thousand tonnes, representing a 6.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports from South-eastern Asia contracted sharply by 63.2% compared to the previous year. The largest increase was recorded in 2018, with a substantial rise of 274.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the key destinations for dried shelled chickpeas exports from South-eastern Asia were India, China, and Pakistan. India accounted for 35.9% of exports in volume, China for 26.4%, and Pakistan for 15.9%. Together, these three countries represented 78.2% of total export flows.

Market performance exhibited noticeable fluctuations over these years. The value of exports peaked in 2018 at 109.3 million US dollars and dropped to its minimum in 2020 at 14.2 million US dollars, showing a 7.7-fold variation. In 2020, exports decreased by 52.7% from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 72.6%, while the most significant increase was in 2018, with a rise of 222.5%.

During the 2017–2020 period, China, India, and Pakistan were the principal buyers of dried shelled chickpeas from South-eastern Asia in value terms. After two years of decline, imports of dried shelled chickpeas into South-eastern Asia rebounded in 2020. The region imported 11.4 million US dollars worth of dried shelled chickpeas that year, marking a strong increase of 19.8% from 2019. However, over the full period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 29%, with an average annual decline of 10.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 9.5 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest drop of 24.0%.

Throughout 2017–2020, India, Australia, and the United States were the key partners for dried shelled chickpeas imports into South-eastern Asia in value terms.
