Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the ASEAN aubergine market experienced consistent growth in both volume and value. Production volume increased from 817 thousand tonnes to 1 005 thousand tonnes, while the total market size expanded from 815 thousand tonnes to 1 008 thousand tonnes. In monetary terms, the market's value rose sharply from $976 million to $1 636 million. A significant leap occurred in 2020 when export prices jumped by 36%, a surge linked to supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which elevated the overall market value.

The market's expansion was further reinforced by a global shift in consumer preferences. By 2023, rising demand for healthy and plant-based foods was clearly influencing the ASEAN region, supporting aubergine consumption. This trend toward fresh, organic, and sustainable produce helped sustain market volume even as production stabilized. Furthermore, into 2024, export prices for fresh aubergines continued to climb, reflecting stringent quality and packaging standards for international trade, although global supply chain and climate factors contributed to ongoing price and supply volatility.
