The market for dried shelled chickpeas in ECOWAS expanded significantly from 3.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 9.5 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was temporarily interrupted in 2020 when the market volume dipped to 5.5 thousand tons, but it resumed strongly thereafter.

The increase in market size was primarily supplied by imports, which rose from 2.3 thousand tons in 2018 to 7.8 thousand tons in 2023. Domestic production remained stable, hovering around 1.8 thousand tons per year throughout the period.

A notable reduction in export volumes after 2021 contributed to greater domestic availability. Exports plummeted from peaks above 1.7 thousand tons in 2020 and 2021 to just 90 tons in 2023.
