The Slovak market for cyclic hydrocarbons grew from 44.1 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 52.6 thousand tons in 2021, supported by rising domestic consumption. Production increased over the same period, reaching 147.1 thousand tons in 2021.

A steep decline followed in 2022, with the market shrinking to 34.9 thousand tons. This contraction was driven by the implementation of stricter European emission standards for vehicles and related energy-sector legislation, which reduced demand for hydrocarbon-based products. Market volume remained low in 2023 at 33.3 thousand tons.

In 2024, the market recovered to 40.3 thousand tons. This rebound coincided with the introduction of an electronic waste record system (ISOH), which established new environmental reporting obligations for industrial facilities.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 30.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 2.0%, while the most significant increase was recorded in 2018, reaching 21.9%.

Slovakia exported 97 003 tons of cyclic hydrocarbons in 2020, up by 9.8% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 26.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.2%. The largest decline was in 2019, at 3.3%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2018, at 19.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Poland, and Hungary were the leading destinations for Slovakia's cyclic hydrocarbon exports in kind. Germany accounted for 38.7% of exports, Poland for 22.6%, and Hungary for 7.4%, together representing 68.6% of total export flows.

Slovakia's cyclic hydrocarbon exports in value terms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports were recorded at 46 717 thousand US dollars, a 24.3% decrease year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 19.5%, with an average annual decline of 7.0%. The maximum value was reached in 2018 at 70 404 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 21.3%.

Imports cyclic hydrocarbons to Slovakia

Slovakia's cyclic hydrocarbon imports in kind declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 2 146 tons, a 33.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 37.5%, with an average annual decline of 14.5%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 5 163 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 50.4%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 37.6%.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 45.8%, with an average annual decline of 18.5%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 4 563 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 7.3%.
