The Romanian market for cyclic hydrocarbons in volume terms underwent a pronounced contraction from 2021 onward. Market volume declined from 12.5 thousand t in 2021 to 5.5 thousand t in 2024, a reduction of over 50%. The most significant decrease occurred in 2024, with volume falling by approximately 40% year-on-year.

This downturn was shaped by evolving supply dynamics. Domestic production fell from 40.8 thousand t in 2021 to 30.8 thousand t in 2023 before rebounding to 40.1 thousand t in 2024. Concurrently, imports consistently dropped from 13.5 thousand t to 7.8 thousand t over the same period, while export volumes remained high, peaking at 42.4 thousand t in 2024.

In value terms, the market showed a different pattern, with its value rising to 18.2 million USD in 2022 despite lower volume, indicating higher unit prices. Subsequently, the market value fell to 9.9 million USD by 2024, aligning with the sharp volume contraction.

Romania's exports of cyclic hydrocarbons declined in 2020 after two years of growth. In 2020, exports amounted to 39 273 tons, representing a 22.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 3.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 50 804 tons, with the largest year-on-year increase of 32.5% also occurring in that year.

Romania's exports of cyclic hydrocarbons in value terms fell to 17 909 thousand US dollars in 2020, marking a 46.5% decline year-on-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 40.8%, with an average annual decline of 16.0%. The peak value was reached in 2019 at 33 479 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest year-on-year increase of 16.5%.

During the 2017–2020 period, Italy, the Netherlands, and Hungary were the main buyers of cyclic hydrocarbons from Romania in value terms, accounting for 26.2%, 17.2%, and 13.9% of exports, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 57.2% of total export value.

Romania's imports of cyclic hydrocarbons in volume terms rose to 13 475 tons in 2020, showing a solid increase of 10.5% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports grew by 4%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.3%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 12 190 tons, which also experienced the largest year-on-year decline of 6.2%.
