At the beginning of the period, Slovakia's formaldehyde market operated under established safety legislation for handling chemicals, including government decrees from 2006 and the Chemical Substances Act. This regulatory framework set the conditions for production and trade. By 2020, production reached 11 217 tonnes, with a substantial portion exported, resulting in a domestic market size of 2 692 tonnes.

Production peaked in 2021 at 13 735 tonnes and exports hit 12 500 tonnes, yet the domestic market shrank to 1 580 tonnes. Output then declined to 12 144 tonnes in 2022 and fell sharply to 5 045 tonnes in 2023. This downturn coincided with the European Union adopting new restrictions on formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances under the REACH regulation, set to take effect in December 2024. The anticipation of these stricter rules likely affected production activity.

In 2024, production dropped further to 2 573 tonnes and the market contracted to 362 tonnes. This continued decline occurred alongside preparations for several legislative changes, including the new regulation on fluorinated greenhouse gases effective from March 2024, which impacts industrial cooling systems, and an anticipated amendment to the law on chemical substances scheduled for 2025. These regulatory shifts contributed to reduced production volumes.

Formaldehyde exports from Slovakia declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 9,086 tonnes, marking a moderate decrease of 9.2% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 41.6%, which translates to an annualized decline of 16.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovakia's formaldehyde exports in kind were heavily concentrated on Poland, which accounted for 80.7% of total flows. Other countries together made up the remaining share.

Formaldehyde exports from Slovakia declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, export volume reached 3,812 thousand US dollars, representing a solid decrease of 23.3% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 49.5%, equating to an annualized rate of decline of 20.3%.

During 2017–2020, the country structure of Slovakia's formaldehyde exports in value terms was strongly focused on Poland, with its share reaching 79.4% of total flows. Other partners accounted for the remaining volume.

After a two-year gain, formaldehyde deliveries to Slovakia declined. In 2020, Slovakia imported 561 tonnes of formaldehyde, which is 16.0% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 56%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 16.0%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 668 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 62.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary and Czechia clearly dominated the partner structure for Slovakia's formaldehyde imports in kind, with other countries together forming the remaining share.

Cross-border shipments of formaldehyde to Slovakia increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, import volume totaled 186 thousand US dollars, indicating a strong increase of 15.1% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 83.8%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 22.5%.
