A sharp drop to 23 988 t occurred in 2019, followed by a recovery to 26 422 t in 2020, before further declines in 2021 and 2023, interrupted by a modest increase to 25 464 t in 2022.

During the period, consumer preferences shifted towards the nutritional benefits and culinary versatility of gooseberries, driving demand for innovative product formats such as juices and wines. This trend was accompanied by global supply chain developments, including increased production in key regions like Poland and Russia, which influenced market availability and dynamics in Northern Europe.

By 2023, market volume reached 21 241 t, continuing the downward trend. Relatively stable harvested areas and production volumes in the region provided a consistent supply base, but overall consumption faced persistent pressure.

In 2020, Northern Europe produced 27 094 tonnes of currants and gooseberries, marking a 13.5% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 14%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 4.4%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 28 480 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 19.8% also occurring that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the most significant decline, with production dropping by 16.2%.

Export volumes showed considerable volatility during these years. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 1 279 tonnes, while in 2020, they peaked at 2 278 tonnes, representing a 78.2% surge from the previous year. This resulted in a 1.8-fold difference between the two years. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 20.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Belarus, and Poland were consistently the top destinations for exports in kind. Germany accounted for 68.7% of exports, Belarus for 10.3%, and Poland for 4.2%, together making up 83.2% of total export flows.

In 2020, Northern Europe exported currants and gooseberries worth 2 450 thousand US dollars, an 18.9% increase year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports rose by 74.6%, averaging an annual growth rate of 20.4%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 1.1%, while the most significant increase occurred in 2018 with a 48.4% jump.

Imports currants and gooseberries to Northern Europe

After two years of decline, imports of currants and gooseberries into Northern Europe rebounded. In 2020, imports totaled 1 606 tonnes, a robust 15.4% increase from 2019. However, over the full 2017–2020 period, imports decreased by 40.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -15.7%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 392 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 47.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland were the largest suppliers of currants and gooseberries to Northern Europe in terms of volume. The Netherlands contributed 34.6% of imports, Spain 17.5%, and Poland 11.1%, together accounting for 63.2% of total imports in kind.

In 2020, imports amounted to 5 542 thousand US dollars, a sharp 55.7% decrease from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 67.3%, with an average annual decline of 31.1%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 17 090 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 0.9%.
