Earlier Report Observations

The Polish market for crispbread, rusks, and toasted bread grew substantially in volume between 2018 and 2019, with market size rising from 5 705 tonnes to 9 031 tonnes, an increase of 58%. This surge was supported by higher domestic production, which reached 15 441 tonnes in 2019. In value terms, the market expanded to 16.4 million US dollars in 2019 from 13.4 million US dollars a year earlier.

By 2020, the market volume stabilized at 9 192 tonnes, just 2% above the 2019 level, while the market value contracted to 14.1 million US dollars, a drop of 14%. Trade data from 2018 to 2024 shows a clear upward trend in imports, which climbed from 4 388 tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 10 910 tonnes in 2023 before moderating to 9 745 tonnes in 2024. In monetary terms, imports surged from 12.8 million US dollars to 31.2 million US dollars over the same period.

Exports of these products also increased initially, from 11 465 tonnes in 2018 to 13 666 tonnes in 2021, but then entered a decline, falling to 10 546 tonnes by 2024. The export value followed a similar pattern, peaking at 32.5 million US dollars in 2023 before dropping to 27.4 million US dollars in 2024. These trade movements indicate a growing reliance on imported crispbread and rusks in the Polish market, alongside competitive pressures on exports in recent years.
