The Spanish cotton bed linen market expanded from 14.4 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 18.5 thousand tonnes in 2021. This period was defined by the mandatory fiber-by-fiber composition labeling required under Royal Decree 928/1987, which applied to each item and its packaging, providing consumers with clearer product information. Market volume saw a temporary contraction to 16.7 thousand tonnes in 2020 before resuming growth.

A significant regulatory shift occurred in 2022 with the passage of the Waste and Contaminated Soils Law (Law 7/2022). This legislation prohibited the destruction of unsold textile surpluses and mandated separate collection for textile waste, imposing new obligations on manufacturers and distributors. In that same year, the market volume surged by 38% to 25.6 thousand tonnes, while its value rose to $197.8 million.

Following the 2022 peak, market volume adjusted to 23.0 thousand tonnes in 2023 before climbing again to 26.0 thousand tonnes in 2024. The market value followed a similar pattern, stabilizing at $172.5 million in 2024.

Cotton bed linen production in Spain declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, output was valued at 46 178 thousand US dollars, marking a 13.5% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 8.1%, with an average annual decline of 2.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 54 837 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 9.1%.

In 2020, Spain produced 5 308 tonnes of cotton bed linen, a 12.8% drop from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 5.6%, averaging a 1.9% annual decline. The peak was in 2019 with 6 086 tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 11.6%.

Foreign cotton bed linen supplies from Spain fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 4 501 tonnes, a 28.6% decrease year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 38.9%, with an average annual decline of 15.1%. The highest volume was in 2018 at 7 757 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 5.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Italy, and Portugal were key buyers of cotton bed linen from Spain, accounting for 17.5%, 16.3%, and 10.3% of exports in kind, respectively. However, their combined share was only 44.2% of total exports, with the remaining 55.8% spread across numerous other partners.

Spain's cotton bed linen exports declined for the second year running. In 2020, exports amounted to 67.0 million US dollars, down 21.2% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 33%, with an average annual decline of 12.5%. The peak value was in 2018 at 104.9 million US dollars, which also recorded the largest increase of 4.9%.

The country composition of exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 was diverse. France, Italy, and Portugal accounted for 15.0%, 11.2%, and 9.6% of exports in value, respectively, but together they made up just 35.8% of total flows.
