Between 2018 and 2020, imports of coffee extracts to Sweden fluctuated between 6 600 t and nearly 7 000 t annually. Exports nearly halved from 3 954 t in 2018 to 2 501 t in 2020. The global pandemic in 2020 created sustainability risks and disruptions in coffee supply chains, affecting raw material availability. This contributed to a market volume of 4 334 t in that year.

Market volume grew to 4 594 t by 2022, while the market's value jumped 38% to 56 million USD, reflecting a broad increase in coffee prices. Although no specific domestic drivers were highlighted for these years, the value growth indicated mounting cost pressures in the supply chain.

From 2023, the EU's deforestation regulation (EUDR) came into force, requiring coffee sold in the EU to be deforestation-free. This tightened certification requirements and likely contributed to a drop in import volume. In 2024, extreme weather in key producing countries like Brazil and Vietnam, combined with logistic disruptions, drove coffee prices higher. Consequently, market volume fell to 3 841 t by 2024, while the market value remained elevated at 55.6 million USD. During this period, competition intensified among global giants, and consumer demand shifted strongly toward certified sustainable and organic coffee.

In 2020, the export volume reached 2 501 tonnes, marking a 6.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 49.8%, with an average annual decline of 20.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the three largest markets for Sweden's coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations in kind were Norway, Czechia, and Finland. Together, they accounted for 82.9% of the total export flows.

In 2020, exports amounted to 31 833 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 1.1% drop from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports declined by 21.9%, which translates to an average annual reduction of 7.9%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Norway, Finland, and Czechia were the leading destinations for Sweden's coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations in value terms. Norway accounted for 46.0% of exports, Finland for 25.2%, and Czechia for 9.2%, with their combined share reaching 80.5% of total export flows.

In 2020, imports totalled 6 682 tonnes, showing a gradual decrease of 4.2% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 3.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 975 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 5.3%.
