The Swedish market for coffee extracts and preparations was influenced from 2018 by growing global demand for specialty and premium coffees, which pushed prices higher. Climate change began to affect coffee production worldwide, leading to unpredictable harvests and regional price volatility. By 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, causing container shortages that hampered bean imports to Sweden, while climate-related natural disasters in major producing countries like Brazil and Nicaragua further reduced yields and tightened supply. Additionally, major Swedish grocery chains employed a 'coffee model' with low promotional prices, shaping retail pricing and consumer behavior.

In 2021, severe drought and frost in Brazil's Minas Gerais region kept raw coffee prices elevated, impacting Swedish roasters. Simultaneously, inflation and higher food prices in Sweden, driven by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, lifted retail coffee costs. The following year, world coffee prices jumped approximately 25%, compounded by a stronger US dollar against the Swedish krona, leading to marked price increases from January 2022. Continued extreme weather in Brazil and Nicaragua, along with global logistics constraints, sustained high prices, driving the market value to 55.8 million USD in 2022 despite a moderate volume increase.

Market volume in physical terms contracted after 2022, falling to 3.8 thousand tons in 2024, while the market value remained high at 55.5 million USD in 2024, indicating persistent elevated price levels. Domestic production of coffee extracts grew steadily from 155 tons in 2022 to 334 tons in 2024, reflecting increased local activity in the segment.

Sweden's exports of coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations have declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports stood at 2 480 tonnes, marking a 6.0% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 49.8%, which translates to an average annual decline of 20.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Norway, Czechia, and Finland were the primary markets for Sweden's exports of coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations in volume terms. Norway accounted for 35.5% of exports, Czechia for 28.6%, and Finland for 19.0%. Together, these three countries made up 83.1% of total export flows.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 21.4%, with an average annual decline of 7.7%.

In terms of value, Norway, Finland, and Czechia were the main destinations for Sweden's exports of coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations from 2017 to 2020. Norway led with 45.9% of exports, followed by Finland at 25.3%, and Czechia at 9.3%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 80.5% of total export value.

After increasing for two years, Sweden's imports of coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations in volume terms declined in 2020. Imports totaled 6 651 tonnes, down by 4.4% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports rose by 3.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.2%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 955 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 5.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Czechia were the key sources for Sweden's imports of coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations in volume terms. The United Kingdom contributed 19.9% of imports, Switzerland 17.6%, and Czechia 14.8%. Together, these three countries represented 52.3% of total import flows.

Imports reached 71 335 thousand US dollars, up by 0.7% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 8.2%, with an average annual decline of 2.8%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 70 837 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest drop of 8.4%.

In value terms, Switzerland, Germany, and Czechia were the main sources for Sweden's imports of coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations from 2017 to 2020. Switzerland accounted for 25.7% of imports, Germany for 16.4%, and Czechia for 15.3%. Combined, these three countries made up 57.3% of total import value.
