The market volume for coffee extracts, concentrates and preparations in Greece contracted from 12 405 tonnes in 2018 to 10 961 tonnes in 2024, while its value increased from $170.0 million to $175.2 million over the same period. This divergence was primarily driven by rising input costs, as international prices for Arabica and Robusta coffee beans surged in 2023 and 2024, elevating production expenses and final product prices. Earlier, in 2020, the introduction of a specific consumption tax of €4 per kilogram on preparations based on coffee extracts increased costs for manufacturers and contributed to a reduction in market volume that year.

Legislative adjustments played a significant role in shaping the market. A 2020 circular clarified that coffee extracts, essences and concentrates do not include products with additives like sugar or flavors, affecting product classification. More substantially, laws passed in 2023 reduced the Value Added Tax rate to 13% for these products when sold in supermarkets and retail food stores. This measure was extended to the hospitality sector from July 2024, aiming to stimulate consumption and partially offset the impact of higher raw material costs, contributing to the volume recovery seen in 2024.

Market evolution was also supported by innovation and shifting consumer preferences. Demand grew for novel coffee products with functional ingredients and sustainable attributes. Strategic partnerships, like the one between Coffeeco Upcycle and Polypack Group, developed sustainable cosmetic packaging using recycled coffee extract, demonstrating diversification beyond food applications. The strong presence of major coffee chains and companies in Greece fostered competition and investment in new products and services throughout the period.

After rising for two years, Greece's production volume of coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations dropped. In 2020, Greece produced 5 020 tonnes, a modest decline of 7.2% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 2.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 5 411 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 3.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, and Australia were the top buyers of Greek coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations in volume terms. Cyprus accounted for 42.2% of exports, the United Kingdom for 21.6%, and Australia for 10.8%, together making up 74.6% of total exports.
